By Dr. Barry Leonard, O.D.

If you have an optometry practice in the Los Angeles area, then you know how difficult it can be to differentiate your services in a heavily saturated market like ours. We’ve discovered one way to stand out from the crowd:  becoming a VSP Premier Edge Optometrist. It takes a significant amount of time and energy, but believe me when I say it will be worth it to you, your practice and especially your patients, who will be able to see even better than ever before.

A True Family Eye-Care Practice

My parents started this optical practice in 1957. It was a true family endeavor where Dad was the optician, Mom was the bookkeeper, and my older sister worked part-time tinting lenses. Even as a young child, I was there sweeping the floors, emptying the trash, and working in the lab with my Dad. Today, we have five generations of patients in the practice. Some remember me as a toddler, and many watched me go off to college and return as their optometrist.

Growing up in the family practice before I became a doctor taught me a lot, such as how to cut and tint lenses, talk to patients about eyewear, and run a business. But the most valuable lesson was to put patients’ needs first.

Even though Optometry, like every business, is a sales business, my father never sold something that the patient didn’t truly need or want. He focused on caring for people and passed that passion on to me. That’s why our patients keep coming back for decades, and why we have multiple generations of patients in the practice today.

Differentiating an Optometry Practice in a Saturated Market

Longevity and reputation aside, it’s essential to differentiate your optometry practice from every one one in your city. It’s especially difficult for us in a big city like Los Angeles, which includes thousands of optometrists. However, as Director of the California Keratoconus Center, I’ve helped set our practice apart by treating patients worldwide who suffer from Keratoconus and other ectatic corneas using the most advanced optometric instruments in the world, like the Eaglet Eye Surface Profiler, the Nidek OPD III, the Zeiss OCT. Becoming a VSP Premier Edge Optometrist has also been a critically important part of our practice and helps to build our reputation among other Optometrists, Ophthalmologists and physicians…not to mention patients.

Having this specialty in Keratoconus allows me to hit the home runs for my patients. I can take someone who’s non-functional in many areas of their life and then suddenly, they’re getting a driver’s license for the first time ever at age 50 or doing other routine things they couldn’t do before.

It’s life-changing for the patient, some of whom travel to my office from all over the world, and so rewarding for me to play a role in that transformation. Today, I have personal invitations to visit my Keratoconus patients in their homes all over the world, including Canada, Europe, and Africa, all because of the bonds we’ve built  taking this journey together.

The Value of Being a VSP Premier Edge Optometrist

When I think about my practice’s success, a lot of it is due to becoming a VSP Premier Edge Optometrist. During this process, VSP has supported our practice in many ways, including providing education for our staff, frame board management, and practice management resources.

Just as important has been the collaboration with our VSP reps, who have become friends and are always just a call away to assist with an issue or come in and train us on a topic we need help with.

Becoming a VSP Premier Edge Optometrist has provided additional benefits to the practice and our patients. Patients come to us because they see their healthcare benefits go further at a VSP Premier Edge practice, with exclusive rebates, advanced exam technology, a worry-free eyewear guarantee, and more. With exceptional first-fit success rates, patients need fewer visits, conserving their healthcare dollars.

We benefit from the increased patient flow and resources like Premier Edge Career Support, which I recently used to hire a new OD. We wanted an individual who would embody the values my father put in place 50 years ago. In a short time, they matched us with Dr. Alex Bennett, who has become an invaluable asset to the practice and who I know will help me carry on my father’s legacy.

Continuing a Legacy of Unequaled Care

As Eye See It, I want my legacy to embody the values I learned from my parents. As I look to the future, I want the practice to continue offering the same type of care to these five (soon six!) generations of families that come here and to focus on caring for people just like my Dad did. Being a VSP Premier Edge Optometrist is an integral part of that legacy of delivering the finest eye care in Los Angeles and to patients worldwide.
