BostonSight SCLERAL Lenses

The California Keratoconus Center is now licensed to provide patients with BostonSight Scleral lenses, a significant advance in vision therapy. Scleral lenses are an excellent choice for anyone who doesn’t want to wear glasses but finds traditional contact lenses uncomfortable. Read on to learn how this exciting new advancement in lens technology could help you!

What Are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral contact lenses are a form of ocular prosthesis that rests over the sclera, the opaque outer layer of the eye. They are designed to form a “vault” over the cornea that naturally fills with tears, keeping the eye moist and hydrated. These new lenses may help with many debilitating eye conditions, from Keratoconus and Corneal Dystrophy to Dry Eye syndrome and damage from Shingles.

Because they do not come into contact with the cornea and cannot be dislodged by the eyelid, scleral lenses are more stable and comfortable than traditional contact lenses. They are also an ideal choice for anyone suffering from advanced irregular corneas or advanced Ocular Surface Disease. The fluid reservoir over the eye can compensate for irregularities in the corneal surface and keep your eyes hydrated and healthy.

If you have ever been told that you are not a good candidate for contacts or have a serious ocular condition that prevents you from wearing regular contact lenses comfortably, then scleral contacts could be the perfect fit for you.

BostonSight PROSE Scleral Lenses

BostonSight is well known for its PROSE lens, a high-quality scleral lens for improving the vision of people with Keratoconus and other corneal Dystrophies that is only available directly from the manufacturer in Boston. If you want the clear vision of the Boston PROSE lens but don’t want to travel to Boston to do it, we have the BostonSight scleral lens with all the same clear qualities as the PROSE lens.

Are Scleral Lenses Right for Me?

BostonSight’s new SCLERAL lenses represent a significant advance in scleral lens technology. Using data from more than 7,000 patients, the designers built a scleral lens fitting system that is easier and quicker than traditional lens fitting processes. The system allows your Optometrist to eliminate the guesswork from contact lens fitting, which means fewer refitting appointments and less time in the chair. Your doctor can measure your eyes more accurately, make complex modifications in real time, and ensure that the lenses fit your eyes comfortably in just a few minutes.

Sometimes your left and right eyes need something different from your contact lenses. Since the BostonSight SCLERAL system measures each eye independently, BostonSight also offers a unique scleral lens voucher program to help patients afford the investment in scleral contacts. And since the new measurement system requires less expensive equipment and pricey staff training, your Optometrist can pass the savings to you!

How Long Do Scleral Lenses Last?

Scleral lenses are made to wear daily for typically 10-16 hours and are cleaned every night. Depending on your lens care habits, scleral lenses should last about 1-2 years.

Are Scleral Lenses Worth the Cost?

Scleral lenses are not excessively expensive, and insurance often covers these lenses. And, because these lenses provide enough improvement over regular lenses in both comfort and vision, patients are happy to make the investment.
